Bringing Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty’s Atsushi to Standard Dragons

With Neon Dynasty, we return to the plane of Kamigawa. I played with the original Kamigawa cards as a young teenager. Amidst an exciting and colorful world, would you guess it was the Spirits, the Samurai or the Kitsune that I remember most vividly?

In truth, it was the Dragons.

That’s why I’m excited to see a new legendary creature made in the model of the old Kamigawa Dragons.

Like the old Dragons, Atsushi is a powerful flying creature that will dominate the game when it goes unanswered. Like the old Dragons, it has a powerful “dies” trigger that will make your opponent reluctant to answer it, and really put them between a rock and a hard place.

But, freshly updated for 2022, we have two mana knocked off its mana cost!

At four mana for a 4/4 flying, you don’t need much more to make for a solid, constructed-quality card. Trample is highly relevant also, particularly in a world where you might encounter Bird tokens from Alrund’s Epiphany, Spiders from Lolth, Spider Queen, Jaspera Sentinel or small chump blockers from creatures with disturb.

And I particularly like the two-pronged option you get when Atsushi dies. If you have a stacked hand and are struggling to deploy your cards quickly, you can make three Treasures (not bad with Goldspan Dragon or Galazeth Prismari, which could easily appear in the same deck as Atsushi). Or if the game is dragging on and you’re looking for more action, you can get an effective “draw two” by accessing the top two cards of your library.

Dragon's Fire

Dragon’s Fire has the potential to be one of the premier removal spells in Standard. But in order to achieve that potential, it needs to be paired with Dragons of power four or greater so that it can kill key threats like Adeline, Resplendent Cathar and Esika’s Chariot. Playing Dragon’s Fire alongside a combination of Atsushi, Goldspan Dragon and Moonveil Regent seems like a good idea, and will be a great place to start in Kamigawa Standard.
