Bring the Beatdown with Pioneer Gruul Midrange

Pioneer Gruul Midrange by d00mwake

The banning of Winota, Joiner of Forces left a void in the Pioneer format. While there are plenty of aggressive decks in the format, and plenty of decks that play Elvish Mystic and Llanowar Elves, with Winota’s absence, there’s been a distinct lack of a red/green-based midrange beatdown deck. Even without access to a broken four-drop, red/green/x has access to a lot of powerful tools and over the last few weeks, various Gruul beatdowns decks have been popping up in the MTGO league deck list dumps. I’m particularly fond of this 75 from MTGO user and Twitch streamer d00mwake who’s been playing it on his channel twitch.tv/d00mwake.

The deck has a score of powerful three-drops to play on turn two after playing one-mana Elf. I’ve found Fable of the Mirror-Breaker to be particular backbreaking when played turn two on the play. I also really like the metagame decision to play lots of removal spells that can deal four damage.

The ability to deal with Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet, Thing in the Ice, Old-Growth Troll, Crackling Drake and Ledger Shredder are all incredibly important since these cards dodge most of the other commonly played red removal in Pioneer.

I have high hopes for Gruul decks in Pioneer going forward and I’m excited to see new takes on the deck over the next few weeks.
