Alchemy’s Banned Grinning Ignus Combo Comes to Pioneer!

Pioneer Temur Ignus Combo by Togec

Birgi, God of Storytelling and Grinning Ignus make up for an infinite combo that’s been around since the Ignus was reprinted in Strixhaven. Lately, we’re seeing this combo pop off again, first being banned on MTG Arena’s Alchemy format, and now making the Top 4 of the Pioneer Challenge on MTGO.

Birgi, God of Storytelling // Harnfel, Horn of BountyGrinning IgnusHazoret's MonumentDevilish Valet

Outside of Llanowar Elves and Elvish Mystic this deck is entirely viable in Explorer on MTG Arena and it uses Birgi, God of Storytelling and Grinning Ignus to make infinite enter the battlefield triggers to pump Devilish Valet and kill your opponent with it.

Another way to kill your opponent is via Hazoret’s Monument. This discounts the Ignus, giving you infinite mana and infinite loots, letting you find Light Up the Night and kill your opponent with that big Fireball.

Runaway Steam-Kin, Thunderkin Awakener and Risen Reef also help the combo, letting you gain mana or draw cards once you put together Birgi and Grinning Ignus.

Llanowar Elves and Collected Company are the glue that holds the deck together, giving you speed and card advantage, which is necessary to compete in a format like Pioneer.

I have played this deck in the past and it’s pretty fun, there is also another version with more elemental creatures but i think this version is better, one thing that i never understood is why play Light Up the Night instead of Banefire? Banefire looks better vs counterspells and i am not sure if the flashback on the light up the night is ever relevant.
