Dominaria is the 78th Magic expansion, and one of many to take place on the plane of the same name. The set contains 269 cards and was released on April 27, 2018. Dominaria serves as a celebration of Magic’s 25th anniversary, revisiting Magic’s original plane for the first time since Time Spiral block.
One of the set’s central themes is legendary cards, centered around a “historic” theme. Historic is any card that’s legendary, an artifact or a Saga. As such, a legendary creature is available in every pack and legendary sorceries were introduced as a new mechanic, requiring a legendary creature or planeswalker on the battlefield to cast.
The set also features the Saga card type for the first time, which was reprised in Theros Beyond Death, Kaldheim and mildly in Modern Horizons 2. Sagas are all enchantments that enter with a lore counter and get another one at the beginning of each main phase. These lore counters each trigger different “chapters” of the Saga with different effects.
Dominaria also brought some cards of note for both its Standard format and eternal formats alike. Teferi, Hero of Dominaria, the first time Teferi has been seen since Time Spiral block, became a keynote card in Standard that sees play regularly in Modern Azorius control decks. Similarly, Karn returns for the first time since New Phyrexia, and has become part of artifact strategies ranging from Legacy to Commander. Finally, Mox Amber provides a powerful mana accelerant, with the caveat of requiring legendary cards to produce mana. It was as a key piece of Kethis combo decks that existed in Standard and Historic.
While Dominaria came before the release of Set Boosters and Collector’s Boosters, it was the first set to notably have a unique Buy-a-Box Promo in Firesong and Sunspeaker, which was also Standard-legal. Since then, every set has had a unique promo instead of an alternate art version of a card in the main set.
