The release of Dominaria United is right around the corner, and with it comes a major Standard rotation. In analyzing the new format, my mind is swirling with what’s leaving, what’s staying and crucially, what’s being added from the new set. Combining all of these, a picture begins to form that Rakdos midrange decks are sure to have a lot of powerful weapons. Since it also happens to be one of my favorite archetypes, I can’t wait to sketch out a few options!
On a foundational level, we can be confident that R/B/x Midrange will work because of what’s staying. In other words, there are tried and true cards that are surviving rotation.
Most competitive players would tell you that Fable of the Mirror-Breaker is the best card currently legal in Standard. Fable survives rotation and, quite honestly, any red deck with four Fable of the Mirror-Breaker and a reasonable core of supporting cards will probably perform very well on day one of new Standard.
Bloodtithe Harvester isn’t quite as flashy, but it’s a solid two-drop that curves well into Fable, and makes a great pairing with Reflection of Kiki-Jiki. As we’ll see, Harvester also pairs well with some of the new options from Dominaria United.
Another reason I’m confident that the R/B color combination will thrive is that it’s included in both the Maestros and the Riveteers. These three-color combinations are featured and well-supported in Streets of New Capenna. While New Capenna was already an impactful set, it will have an even larger footprint in the smaller, post-rotation card pool.
