Standard has a couple of boogeymen right now. The results over the weekend were very extreme, with two decks accounting for a vast share of the metagame, and being among the only decks with winning records. The first is Mono-Green Aggro or Mono-Green Snow – same deck, different name. The second is Izzet Epiphany. The Mono-Green deck features the first boogeyman of Standard, Esika’s Chariot, and Izzet Epiphany features the other, Alrund’s Epiphany (in no particularly order), and today I’ll be going over some of the best answers to Esika’s Chariot and Alrund’s Epiphany alike.
One thing that Esika’s Chariot and Alrund’s Epiphany both have in common is that they’re very hard to fight with individual cards. The one exception to this are counterspells. Counterspells are somewhat effective, individually, against both of the cards. However, there are certainly properties of both the decks that render counterspells less effective, which I’ll discuss in their respective sections. Still, there is hope, as you’ll learn how to beat Esika’s Chariot and Alrund’s Epiphany alike.
