If you’re a long-time Magic player, then the idea of a Standard Azorius Control deck won’t come as a surprise to you. The basic structure of card drawing, permission spells and whatever Wrath of God equivalent happens to be legal is a tried and true recipe.
That said, Azorius has struggled recently. This is true in part due to the potency of threats like Esika’s Chariot, which spiral out of control and can’t always be cleaned up on a one-for-one basis. Moreover, nothing has really shown up to draw us towards the Azorius colors since the legendary Teferi, Hero of Dominaria and Teferi, Time Raveler rotated out of Standard.
Now, it’s not my intention to claim that Teferi, Who Slows the Sunset is as strong as either of the other planeswalkers mentioned above. However, it is a very solid card which, when you build around it, becomes the lynchpin of an unusual, but highly effective control deck.
