In Modern, there are several format-defining one-mana creatures. Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer, Dragon’s Rage Channeler, Esper Sentinel, Death’s Shadow, Monastery Swiftspear, Hedron Crab, Zabaz, the Glimmerwasp and Young Wolf are all examples of one-mana creatures that are crucial to the success of many of the top decks in Modern. Capitalizing on the power of efficient one-drops like this is always going to be a great strategy in Modern. The format has always rewarded low mana curves and aggression. For the last few weeks, I’ve been working on a RW Stoneblade deck list that looks to maximize the potential of the powerful one-mana creatures Modern has available. One of these cards is a powerful and underexplored threat from Throne of Eldraine, World Champion Javier Dominguez’s card, Fervent Champion.
While the champ has seen plenty of play in Standard, it’s never quite found its home in Modern, but it’s clear to see that the way to maximize its power is to pair it with powerful Equipment of, more specifically, Swords. A one-mana creature with haste that can equip any number of Equipment to itself for zero mana has a huge amount of potential in a format with Stoneforge Mystic.
Here’s where I’m at with the deck list at the moment. I’ve been really impressed by it recently and I’ve found it to be great versus opposing Ragavan decks, control, Hammer Time, Dredge and other creature strategies. I’ve found it to be weak to linear combo decks like Oops All Spells/Belcher and Rhinos.
