Modern Esper Stoneblade – Deck Guide

Modern Esper Stoneblade

Evaluating cards is one of the most challenging aspects of Magic, especially as a deck builder. There are currently 14,958 unique cards legal in Modern and with the release of Modern Horizons 2, each new card needs to be weighed against the other 14,957. It’s also true that with the release of Modern Horizons 2, it’s important to evaluate the older playable cards to see how they stack up against the new ones, especially for a deck like today’s, Modern Esper Stoneblade. These older cards tend to fall into one of two categories.

  1. A card will become more powerful because new cards that synergize with it are printed.
  2. A card will become less powerful as new options that fill a similar role are printed.

Today, I’ll be talking about Stoneforge Mystic, a card that I believe has become much more powerful with Modern Horizons 2

It’s difficult to bring up Stoneforge Mystic and not bring up Batterskull.

Stoneforge MysticBatterskull

The ability to tutor up a Batterskull and put it into play at instant speed for a huge discount with Stoneforge Mystic’s ability is the main reason Stoneforge became a multi-format powerhouse. The biggest weakness of Equipment is that they tend to be a big mana investment that has no impact on the game unless you have a creature and the mana to equip. Batterskull, and other Equipment with living weapon, get around this weakness by entering the battlefield with a creature equipped. Until Modern Horizons 2, Batterskull was the only powerful living weapon you could play. That’s no longer true.
