Modern Elementals – Deck Guide Update

Modern is all about grinding these days, and Elementals is the best deck in the format at generating value.

Before Modern Horizons 2, Elementals was a fringe deck, never seeing serious tournament play. However, they’re now one of the very best tribes, with excellent synergy, plus many of the most individually-powerful creatures in Modern having creature-type Elemental.

Recently, Elemental tribal has come back from the brink of extinction, and become one of the most popular and successful ways to utilize the all-star Omnath, Locus of Creation. Today, I’ll examine why that is, as well as give you everything you need to be successful picking up this awesome strategy.

Omnath, Locus of Creation

This Deck Guide is very much a team effort. It’s written in consultation with Gabriel Nassif, who’s been playing (and winning) a lot with Elementals lately. It’s updated from AspiringSpike’s original Deck Guide, written last year.

While a number of different builds are possible, here’s what Nassif used to make the top 8 of last weekend’s Magic Online Modern Challenge.

  1. Thanks for the article Reid and Yellow Hat! Lately it appears the 4 Color Blink version running counterspell, less fury, less eladamri’s call and expressive iteration over reef has been doing better. Could you provide any insight into how to choose between the two options when going into an open, unknown paper meta?

  2. Hi Ron, it sounds like you’re describing the deck I call “Omnath Midrange.” (I call the Risen Reef version “Elementals.”) I’d say that Omnath Midrange is more well-rounded, while Elementals is better in matchups that are centered around card advantage and generating value. But they’re both very strong and, as you mentioned, share a common core of cards. You can’t go wrong with either.
