Kamigawa Alchemy Brews – The New UW Control with Farewell

Every set seems to be giving white a similar Wrath of God effect. While some of them are less good than others, they all try to the same thing: reset the board state to give control decks the time to get back into the game. However, because of planeswalkers (Sorin the Mirthless) and Vehicles (Esika’s Chariot), a simple sweeper like Doomskar isn’t going to be enough. Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty is giving us access to a special type of Wrath – Farewell. It’s an excellent upgrade to Merciless Eviction and Austere Command that allows you choose exactly what kind of permanent you want to permanently get rid of and what you want to keep alive, with the exception of planeswalkers.

Farewell

Say you have a Search for Azcanta in play and your opponent has Witch’s Oven and Cauldron Familiar together with some other annoying creatures. With one simple trick (a pretty expensive one since six mana isn’t a joke), you can clean it all away, leaving your enchantment in play as well as emptying their graveyard.

You have total control on how to resolve this card and that’s what makes it special and better than Cleansing Nova in Historic. Yes, you’re paying an extra mana, but Food decks usually give you that kind of time if you’re interacting with them in the meanwhile.

I still wouldn’t main-deck Farewell in Historic, since Wrath of God and Day of Judgment are simply much cheaper, but it’s definitely worth the slot in the sideboard for the Food and Enchantress matchup. However, for Alchemy, this seems like the perfect for UW Control.
