How to Play Liliana of the Veil in MTG – Deep Dive

Liliana of the Veil is one of the strongest planeswalkers ever printed. She also happens to be one of the most interesting, complex and subtle planeswalkers we’ve had to deal with. She’s challenging to play with and demands a coherent deckbuilding strategy in order to maximize her.

Liliana of the Veil

Liliana’s power is relative rather than absolute. Her power is based on the context of what’s going on around her, rather than existing completely in a vacuum. She scales according to the format and based on her matchup against commonly-played threats.

In this way, Liliana doesn’t fit the mold of the other “best planeswalkers” like Oko, Thief of Crowns, Jace, the Mind Sculptor, Nissa, Who Shakes the World or Teferi, Hero of Dominaria. Those planeswalkers generate repeated advantages and snowball out of control every time they go unanswered. If one of those was to be reprinted, we could be certain that it would help to define the competitive Standard environment.

Liliana is more subtle. You don’t automatically win if she goes unanswered for a few turns. Instead, her value comes in the ability to take the game in a direction you want it to go, and the ability to build your deck in a way that supports your planeswalker. Liliana’s power might not be guaranteed, but when she achieves her full potential, she can be as strong as any of the planeswalkers listed above.

Liliana of the Veil also happens to be my favorite Magic card of all time. Her ability to stay relevant across so many formats and eras of MTG has led to a lifelong partnership, and even sets her apart from other beloved cards. Since she’s being reprinted in the soon-to-be-released Dominaria United set, the time is right for a single card Deep Dive! I’ll cover what Liliana can do, where she shines, how to play with her and offer deck lists to use her across a variety of formats.

  1. “two creatures to protect her” The ravens do not block so they really do not protect anything. Great article!
