For me, one of the defining aspects of Modern is the number of creature-based combos available in the format. The rich history includes everything from Splinter Twin to Melira–Pod to Devoted Druid–Vizier of Remedies, with dozens more along the way. These decks are flexible, customizable and tend to be quite engaging to pilot.
Last year, several new combos broke into the format centered around Heliod, Sun-Crowned. Michael Jacob won the Magic Online Championship with such a deck, which was the biggest Magic tournament held since the World Championship in February of 2020. I currently have Heliod/Ballista ranked number one in the Modern Power Rankings, and that position was validated last weekend by Martin-Eric Gauthier winning a MTGO Champions Showcase with it.
