Dodge the Bolts! – Modern Temur Murktide – Deck Guide

After playing Izzet Murktide a lot in Modern – stay tuned for the Deep Dive about it that should come out soon – I discovered that its true strengths were Murktide Regent, its efficient removal spells and card advantage engine. However, Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer and Dragon’s Rage Channeler were often over targeted and made the deck lose some of its power. That’s why I decided to brew up this Temur Murktide control deck that cut the cheap threats in favor of Tarmogoyf and Wrenn and Six. This deck can dodge Lightning Bolt entirely while also having a better midrange game later by having access to the Wrenn and Six + Lonely Sandbar/Canopy land engine and Klothys, God of Destiny.

TarmogoyfWrenn and SixMurktide RegentStubborn Denial

Tarmogoyf has been slightly pushed out Modern because of Unholy Heat and Prismatic Ending both acting as efficient answers to it.

While you can’t avoid Prismatic Ending anyway, I found this deck to be capable of having a 6/7 Tarmogoyf thanks to Wrenn and Six adding that sixth type in the graveyard against Unholy Heat, which you can dodge by waiting to cast Tarmogoyf until later in the game.

While Wrenn and Six cannot dodge those cards, she’s been great at guaranteeing your land drops while also granting late game card advantage with Fiery Islet, Waterlogged Grove and most importantly Lonely Sandbar. I’ve also killed plenty of X/1s, most notably Dragon’s Rage Channeler and Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer, that always make me very happy to play a deck with Wrenn and Six these days.

Finally, there’s Murktide Regent, the best threat in Modern. Delving can sometimes hurt Tarmogoyf or Wrenn and Six, so be mindful of that and try to also look at what your opponent has in their graveyard to keep Tarmogoyf as big as you can.

The presence of Murktide Regent and Tarmogoyf made me cut Snapcaster Mage. I just don’t want to tax the graveyard more than I should, especially since opponents are also going to mess with it and I know how much it hurts.

Stubborn Denial and Prismari Command are the last two flex slots of the deck.

Stubborn Denial is to protect your Murktide Regent. You can also turn on ferocious with Tarmogoyf and I wanted a cheap way to protect my few threats in the same way that Flusterstorm or Mystical Dispute can do it post-sideboard. Also, Stubborn Denial is often an hard counter against Expressive Iteration or Crashing Footfalls, since they’re usually played on curve on turn three and you’re able to snag them with the Stubborn Denial in Force Spike mode. I’ve been very impressed by it and rarely ever sideboard it out.

A card that I’m still testing out and find myself sideboarding out sometimes is Prismari Command. It’s in the Abrade or Engineered Explosives slot. I loved Prismari Command when playing Temur Rhinos and wanted to try it in this midrange deck. I’ve played few leagues with it and killed several annoying artifacts like Batterskull or Chalice of the Void. Also, I’ve looted away extra lands from Wrenn and Six, since you often find yourself flooded when Wrenn and Six doesn’t find a Canopy land or Lonely Sandbar. I’m not completely sold on it but I’m liking it in this deck too.

Klothys, God of Destiny was one of the main reasons why I wanted to go Temur. It’s a beating against Izzet Murktide, as it both disrupt their graveyard and puts up a clock so you can control the game without needing to overexpose. I also love Klothys against Lurrus of the Dream-Den strategies too as they’re often trying to grind you and kill your threats and an indestructible enchantment is very nice.

Modern sideboards used to play Chalice of the Void as a way to deal with Crashing Footfalls, Living End and Glimpse of Tomorrow. Various decks like Eldrazi Tron can play it in the main deck as they’re able to cast it X=1, although this Temur Murktide deck can’t and as a way to disrupt those free spells I decided to play Void Mirror in my sideboard. Void Mirror also helps you against Elementals since they try to cast Incarnations (like Solitude and Fury) for free and Ephemerate them and Void Mirror both counters both the evoke Elementals and the rebound off Ephemerate. You can also use Void Mirror against Amulet Titan to counter their Summoner’s Pact and against Eldrazi Tron to counter their deck whenever they don’t draw Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth or a basic Island.

I love Veil of Summer, but you don’t have to oversideboard it. For example, I don’t like to bring it in on the draw against Rakdos Lurrus, but I’d love to get their Thoughtseize on turn one if I’m on the play. Veil of Summer is outstanding in the counter wars and even against Dimir Mill to stop their Archive Trap, but sadly not their Tasha’s Hideous Laughter or Fractured Sanity.

Speaking of Mill, I want to include an Emrakul, the Aeons Torn only for that matchup. Mill is a very popular deck and I want to be ready with just one simple Eldrazi floating around in the deck, waiting to be milled over.
