Deep Dive: How to Get Lucky

Luck is a frequent topic of conversation when it comes to Magic, and for good reason. We are playing a game defined by random chance, and it’s obvious to even new players that if they had only drawn one more land, or one less, they would easily have won the game. Most articles will tell you to disregard luck, not factor it in, and under no circumstances complain about it.

This article is going to be a little bit different. We’re going to embrace luck, lean into it and learn to harness it. Ask yourself this:

Do you think that pros get luckier than their opponents, on average?

Do you think that I am intrinsically luckier when it comes to games of Magic than you?

Not everyone can honestly say “no” to the above questions, and that’s totally fine (though my Rivals matches from last week should do pretty good work convincing you the second is definitely not true). I myself play into the whole “LSV gets lucky again” meme a lot for many reasons, the main one being that I enjoy being a buffoon. At the end of the day, we make our own luck, and this article is going to examine a bunch of ways you can get luckier, or at least appear to.
