I’m rubbing my hands in glee – control has received great tools already midway through Dominaria United spoiler season. Readers that know me know that I very much love brewing, tuning and playing control decks, especially in Standard. In this article, I will take a closer look at the new potential additions to control and furthermore, I will provide you with deck lists to showcase what some of these cards enable us to play.
Let’s start with my favorite card spoiled thus far and perhaps the most impactful card for Standard play.
Cut Down is what dreams are made of. I still miss Fatal Push and Cut Down might just be stronger than Fatal Push was, if we talk specifically about Standard. I don’t believe that Cut Down is better than Fatal Push in eternal formats though.
A one-mana removal spell that pretty much destroys all of the one and two-drops while getting rid of a decent chunk of three and four-drops too is outstanding. This card will define what creatures you put in your deck. Raffine, Scheming Seer will likely fall out of favor due to Cut Down. 3/3s just got very sexy.
For control, this means having access to a cheap removal that will prevent you from falling behind early. Cut Down makes it so that you can keep up with whatever comes at you and that you often pay less mana than what your opponent paid for their creature. This card will be a Standard staple.
