5 Things to Know About Modern MTG This Month

The last month of Modern has had some of the biggest metagame shifts we have seen in this year. Between new cards making waves and old strategies finding their way to the top tiers of the format, there’s a lot to catch up to stay on top of Magic’s best Constructed format.

The question after Dominaria United previews was less if Leyline Binding would see play with fetchlands and Triomes in Modern, and more how good would it be operating at its peak? Turns out the answer is pretty darn good. Leyline Binding has become one of the foremost cheap removal spells of the format, and previously resilient cards like Murktide Regent are now much easier to answer.

Leyline Binding

There is still a cap on how good Leyline Binding is in Modern. The big question for over a year has been how do you stop turn one Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer, and Leyline Binding isn’t the best at that. It’s also a liability against Boseiju, Who Endures and is yet another removal spell that can’t kill Tourach, Dread Cantor. If you aren’t playing one of the many Leyline Binding decks, think about getting these cards or similar ways to line up well against Binding into your deck.

A side effect of Leyline Binding has been Omnath, Locus of Creation decks dabbling with black spells. Most of these additions are low consequence, but if your deck struggles against Unmoored Ego, you should start accounting for that with Veil of Summer or more diversified win conditions.
