2022 was a big year for me in Magic: The Gathering. Not only did I launch my career as a Magic writer, but I also experienced a string of competitive success that was unprecedented for me. A big reason for that – really, for both avenues of success – was a rapid improvement in my Magic skill over the course of 2022.
I have been playing Magic consistently since September of 2018. I’ve always been a fast learner, but the skills I’ve picked up in 2022 far surpass the other three years I’ve played this game. I owe a lot to the friends I’ve made playing Magic in the past year, largely because I’ve approached this game with the attitude of a sponge. I have tried not to tie my skill (or my results) to my own ego, instead adopting a perpetual role as a student of the game. Now, at the end of 2022, I’d like to pass along what I’ve learned this year to you.
